Reasons to choose Lumens branded ballasts:
At Lumens, we pride ourselves on the quality of our products. Our ballasts are considered the best in the industry for the following reasons:
- All of our ballasts incorporate digital technology
- Rubber injection is used to fill the ballasts
- We only use ballasts producing AC power @ 35W
- offered in both standard size and small sizes

1) Digital Vs Analog Ballast Differences Clarified |
|
Analog |
Digital |
Output Power Fluctuations |
35W ± 2W (ie. 33W - 37W)
Analog ballasts rely on coils, resistors, and capacitors to transform the DC power from your vehicle to AC power to ignite and power HID bulbs. Fluctuations in the output of power to the HID bulbs shortens the life of the bulb. In a short time it becomes noticeable that the light becomes less bright. |
35W ± 0.5W (ie. 34.5W - 35.5W)
Digital ballasts also converts DC power from vehicles to AC power, but also have added DSP chips to improve the stability of power used to power the HID bulb. With a smaller fluctuation in power, the HID bulbs will reach their potential lifespan. |
Wave Bands |
Inconsistent waves from an analog ballast connected to an oscilloscope shows the 'dirty' power output from analog ballasts. |
Standard square wave band produced by digital ballast shows the consistent power output from a Lumens ballasts. |
Ballast Temperature |
Analog ballasts, generally, do not produce excessive heat and only reach 31° celcius. |
Low grade and older designed digital ballasts produce excessive heat (up to 70° celcius). The more heat a ballasts produces, the lower the grade of ballast it is. Lumens digital technology uses top grade components and does not produce any more heat than traditional analog ballasts! |
Visual Light Output |
Analog ballasts rely on its power source producing 'clean' power. Unfortunately on vehicles, the power produced fluctuates as different electrical parts are turned on and off, etc. This directly influences the light produced by the HID system - the light is not as 'clean' as that off a stable power source and will dim with time as the HID bulb fails prematurely. |
Digital ballasts filter the dirty power coming from vehicles and outputs clean AC power to the HID bulb. The light produced is generally sharper in appearance and more consistent in color & output. |
Lifespan |
Generally does not survive its true lifespan as the power fluctuations from vehicles shorten the life of the product. |
Has a much better chance of living its true lifespan as the DSP chip cleans & filters all the fluctuations in power before converting the DC power to AC. |

2) Advantages of Epoxy / Rubber Injection Filled Ballasts
By injecting rubber into all Lumens ballasts, and vacuum sealing the insides with this material, all the air is forced out of the ballast.
i) This material prevents condensation from building on the electronics inside the ballasts. This is particularly important for those living in colder areas and those living in very humid areas.
ii) With the insides being filled with rubber between the eletrical components, the ballast becomes substantially more shock proof, as parts will not loosen from the circuit board as easily.
iii) Prevents water from entering the ballast and damaging the electrical circuitry. |

3) AC vs DC, 35W vs 55W Ballasts
Both types of ballasts take the DC power from vehicles and power the HID bulbs for light. The difference in these ballasts is in the type of electricity being outputted to the HID bulb. AC ballasts output AC power, while DC ballasts output DC power. With AC ballasts, you can expect longer life in both bulbs and ballasts. Aside from that, AC ballast systems are brighter than DC ballast systems. With competition becoming so fierce in this industry, many manufacturers have given into DC ballast technology in order to lower their prices. Unlike our competitors, we still insist on AC ballasts to ensure proper life span, and most importantly, maximum light output!
When discussions occur about maximum light output with regards to Xenon HID systems, 55W ballasts become the hot topic. 55W ballasts truly provide more light output for the drivers (about 40% more), but the trade offs are too large to make this product pratical. The largest downfall to this product is its short lifespan. Most 55W HID users will admit that they replace their bulbs at least once per year (some as quickly as each month). One of the main reasons it fails in such a short period is because the bulb itself 'burns' much hotter than a regular 35W HID bulb. This extra heat may cause issues for those with plastic lenses, projector lights, etc. Some people use the 55W ballasts to overcome the light out warning indicators on higher end vehicles, but this is not a guaranteed solution. In fact, most new vehicles with light out warning indicators will still produce error codes with 55W ballasts! |

4) Small vs Standard Ballasts
We offer all of our ballasts in 2 sizes: Small or Standard size. Most of our competitors also offer 2 sizes, but they generally name them 'digital' and 'analog'. To be clear, both of our ballasts are digital ballasts. The main difference between them is only the size. |
|
|
Our smaller ballast contains all the parts inside its casing and does not have an external ignitor. This minimizes the damage due to external ignitors hitting objects while driving by having the ignitor mounted properly, rather than just hanging like our competitors' designs.
Notice how the ignitor is quite large and bulky. Also, you'll notice that there isn't any way to mount this piece properly. With the normal bumps from standard driving, risk of damage to this piece is increased everytime the vehicle is driven! At the same time, if this piece is hitting another fragile part in your vehicle, that part could be more susceptible to damage. |
For most vehicles, the standard ballast size is sufficient, but for other vehicles (snow mobiles, motorcycles, atvs, etc), the smaller ballast will most likely be the best choice when space is critical.
Measurements are provided for our small ballast for your convenience (measured in cm). Again, there aren't any external ignitors to hang or mount. |
